The Snowbound Kingdom

Mistralis

A kingdom kept alive by heat, oath, and hunger.

Beneath near-perpetual snow, Mistralis survives on engineered warmth, communal harvests, ancient faith, and the people trusted to keep winter outside.

Survival Is Infrastructure

Three Things Between Mistralis and Winter

The kingdom survives because warmth, food, and habitable land are maintained deliberately. Lose one, and winter begins taking the rest.

H
Below the Streets

Heat

An immense subterranean grid carries ley-heat beneath homes, streets, greenhouses, and public buildings.

Open the Grid

Ley-heat is drawn primarily from the Northern Duchy, distributed through reinforced channels, and stored in silver-blue heatstones for emergencies and remote use.

Explore the Heating Grid
G
Beneath Glass

Harvest

Every district maintains an immense communal greenhouse because ordinary fields cannot survive the snowbound climate.

Enter the Greenhouses

Grain, roots, vegetables, fruit, culinary herbs, medicinal plants, and fodder are cultivated under protection. Greenhouse care is basic civic knowledge taught from childhood.

B
Where Warmth Ends

Boundary

Permanent settlement ends where the heating grid can no longer keep streets, water, buildings, and people alive.

Go to the Edge

Mistralis can expand, but only after frozen ground is surveyed, excavated, reinforced, insulated, ventilated, and connected safely to the existing grid. The outer settlements live closest to failure.

Below Mistralis

Enter the Hearthways

Beneath the snowbound streets runs a second city of heated stone. Safe sections of Mistralis's tunnel network have become sheltered roads, markets, gathering places, warming halls, and refuges from winter above.

Nearby, behind restricted passages and guarded doors, the Royal Gridworks keeps ley-heat moving through the kingdom.

Frostcrown rises at the royal center. Around it, eight districts form the counties of Mistralis's four Inner Duchies, each with its own work, institutions, nightlife, gossip, and reasons to stay out too late.

What the Winter Could Not Take

Mistralis survives through engineering and labor, but its people understand survival as something larger than staying warm. A soul may die, be judged, endure Stillwinter, and one day return.

R
The Cycle of Souls

The Returning

Death is not considered an ending. After death, every soul faces the Reckoning, where its own choices are weighed. A sentence in Stillwinter may follow before the soul is eventually permitted another life.

No soul remains in Stillwinter forever. Punishment is temporary, and reincarnation ultimately awaits everyone.

S
Proof Across Lives

Recognition Sentences

During life, every person memorizes a private sentence. Their family preserves it after death. If someone later claims to remember that life, repeating the sentence correctly becomes powerful evidence that the soul truly returned.

Kept Private Known in life. Preserved in death. Remembered only if the soul returns.
The People of Mistralis

The People Who Hold the Winter

Mistralis is not ruled by distant names in dusty genealogies. Its nobles control heat, food, roads, armies, education, trade, and the exposed edges of civilization. Its knights stand between ordinary citizens and the disasters waiting beneath the ice.

The King

At the center of Mistralis sits a ruler older than nearly every institution beneath his Crown.

King Amaru Qhispi, an ancient ice dragon with long navy hair, icy blue eyes, crystalline horns, and blue-white scales.
His Crystalline Majesty

Amaru Qhispi

King of Mistralis Ice Dragon Approx. 300 6'4"

An ancient crystalline ice dragon who has ruled Mistralis for roughly a century, Amaru protects the kingdom with patience, terrifying power, and a loneliness few people are permitted to witness.

Physical Profile
Build
6'4", approximately 225 pounds, lean, powerful, long-limbed, and built with the controlled strength of a practiced swordsman.
Appearance
Lightly tan skin, icy blue eyes, sharp features, crystalline horns, and diamond-like blue-white scales at his temples and shoulders.
Hair
Long deep-navy hair with a smooth, heavy fall and a subtle blue sheen.
Scent
Cold stone, cedar smoke, clean snow, and faint ozone.
Mannerisms
Becomes unnervingly still while evaluating someone, touches one signet ring while thinking, and angles his head like a listening dragon.
Physiology
Exceptionally slow aging, extreme cold tolerance, and draconic regeneration. Heavy magical exertion can force a brief torpor.
Social Profile
Public Mask
Serene, formal, patient, and almost impossible to surprise.
Trusted Circle
Duke Ramiro, the Royal Gridmaster, and a very small number of people allowed close enough to see the man beneath the Crown.
Romance
Extremely selective and slow to trust. Once attached, he becomes attentive, possessive, and considerably softer in private.
Gives Affection Through
Protected private time, acts of service, meaningful gifts, physical closeness, and remembering small preferences.
Worst Habits
Emotional withholding, overprotection, solving personal problems through royal authority, and expecting loyalty before explaining his fears.
Psychological Profile

Amaru is a disciplined, long-lived ruler shaped by duty, grief, and the loneliness of repeatedly outliving people he loves. He thinks in systems and decades rather than moments.

Cognitive Style
Strategic and systems-oriented. He considers succession, infrastructure, consequences, and second-order effects before acting.
Emotional Style
Deep but heavily contained. Tenderness, jealousy, sorrow, and anger remain intense beneath his composure.
Core Flaw
He equates love with protection and continuity, which can turn care into control when fear enters the equation.
Verbal Style
Uses the royal "we" in public, speaks in short measured sentences, and reveals dry humor only around trusted company.
Struggles
Chronic loneliness, hypervigilance around betrayal, and periodic ennui that he refuses to call illness.
Personal Life
Spirituality
Publicly observant of the Returning faith, privately uncertain whether reincarnation represents mercy or another form of obligation.
Hobbies
Ice sculpture, genealogy, strategy games, high-altitude flight, and cultivating rare blue flowers in the palace conservatory.
Skills
Statecraft, law, diplomacy, swordsmanship, draconic ice magic, aerial combat, and reading political motives.
Vices
Ancient fruit brandy, political chess, collecting private promises, and lingering far too long with his favorite companion when he should be sleeping.
Music
Low choral music, reed-pipe ensembles, deep ceremonial drums, and intimate court strings.
Intimacy
Sexuality
Bisexual and strongly demisexual.
Behavior
Reserved, private, trust-driven, and monogamous in practice despite the political existence of his royal harem.
Preferences
Praise, possessive devotion, ritualized obedience, and negotiated power exchange, all rooted in trust and the rare opportunity to set sovereignty aside with someone safe.
Background

Born into an ancient ice-dragon dynasty, Amaru inherited a fragile monarchy and spent his early reign securing Crown authority over heat distribution and noble contracts.

A succession crisis taught him that affection could become a political weapon. Later, a catastrophic ley-heat failure convinced him that infrastructure could protect a kingdom as decisively as any army.

Current Circumstances
Roughly a century into his reign, Amaru presides over a stable kingdom while balancing ambitious nobles, vulnerable outer marches, and the physical limits of Mistralis's heating grid.
Royal Harem
Primarily a political institution. He rarely touches its members and repeatedly returns to one favored companion whose influence is personal rather than official.

Dukes

The Inner Territories

The Four Inner Dukes

The four Inner Dukes govern the safest, warmest, and wealthiest territories surrounding the Crownlands. Each controls two districts and a piece of Mistralis the kingdom cannot afford to lose.

Duke Ramiro Villarroel, a broad polar bear demi-human with river-stone hair, marigold eyes, bear ears, facial piercings, and a scar across his nose.
Northern Duke

Ramiro Villarroel

Polar Bear Demi-Human • 48 • 6'2"
Northern Duchy • Rimegate + Winterglass

Gruff, barrel-chested, and painfully practical, Ramiro controls the land surrounding Mistralis's primary ley-heat extraction sites and trusts machinery, workers, and firsthand evidence more than courtly promises.

Open Profile

Age
48.
Birthday
April 27.

Mistralan northerner from a landholding family tied to ley-well stewardship, industrial operations, and freight routes.
Wealth
Exceptionally wealthy through land and industrial revenue, although Crown law sharply limits his ability to sell, negotiate, or withhold ley-heat.
Transportation
An armored heat-sledge pulled by trained polar bears. He prefers walking inspection sites whenever conditions allow.
Physical Profile
Build
6'2" and approximately 275 pounds. Barrel-chested and thick through the shoulders, arms, and torso.
Appearance
Weathered light-brown skin, marigold eyes, a scar crossing his nose, angel-bite piercings, rounded white polar-bear ears, and an otherwise human face and body.
Hair
Dense river-stone gray hair, medium in length, with messy unruly bangs.
Scent
Wool, cold iron, pine resin, black tea, and clean animal warmth.
Mannerisms
Folds his arms when skeptical, rubs the bridge of his scarred nose when tired, and turns one bear ear toward mechanical irregularities.
Medical
Runs unusually warm and overheats easily indoors. An old right-shoulder injury from a tunnel collapse still causes trouble.
Allergy
Severe bee-venom allergy. He carries a healer-prepared antidote during inspections.
Social Profile
Public Mask
Gruff, practical, immovable, and deeply unimpressed by ceremony.
Friends
King Amaru, Knight Matías Soliz, several senior Gridwrights, and a small circle of northern foremen who are permitted to speak to him bluntly.
Romance
Protective, tactile, and direct. Ramiro courts through reliability, food, practical help, repairs, and making room for someone in his daily life.
Gives Affection Through
Acts of service, physical touch, shared meals, practical gifts, and steady presence.
Worst Habits
Overprotection, territorial jealousy, making decisions for a partner, and using silence as punishment.
Psychological Profile

Ramiro is a duty-driven industrial lord who distrusts abstraction and respects anyone willing to understand how survival actually works.

Cognitive Style
Concrete, mechanical, and risk-focused. He prefers numbers, site visits, and firsthand testimony over polished reports.
Emotional Style
Strong and plainspoken, with quick irritation, enduring loyalty, and a surprisingly gentle domestic side.
Core Belief
Love is proven through labor and protection. Unfortunately, that belief sometimes convinces him emotional discussion is unnecessary.
Verbal Style
Short sentences, blunt questions, muttered profanity, and affectionate nicknames delivered with a perfectly straight face.
Struggles
Chronic hypervigilance after surviving a tunnel collapse, pain-related insomnia, and difficulty admitting fear.
Personal Life
Spirituality
A practical believer in the Returning faith who values memorial customs more strongly than doctrine.
Hobbies
Woodcarving, strength contests, repairing old tools, cooking heavy stews, and teaching young bears to accept harness.
Skills
Industrial administration, heatstone logistics, crisis command, wrestling, tunnel safety, and labor negotiation.
Vices
Strong tea, cards for money, overwork, and personally taking inspections that should absolutely be delegated.
Music
Work songs, deep drums, old marching tunes, and sentimental tavern ballads he absolutely insists he does not know.
Intimacy
Sexuality
Bisexual.
Behavior
Affectionate, physically confident, protective, and strongly attentive to a partner's comfort and consent.
Preferences
Praise, service, size contrast, controlled roughness, and protective dominance. Strength is most meaningful to him when it can be expressed as care rather than threat.
Background

Ramiro inherited the Northern Duchy young after a mining accident killed his father and several senior stewards.

Working beside rescue crews during the collapse earned him Rimegate's loyalty and permanently destroyed his patience for nobles who discuss the heating grid as though it were merely an accounting line.

Current Circumstances
He balances immense regional influence against strict Crown contracts and worries that future expansion will demand more ley-heat than the current distribution system can safely carry.
Court Problem
His bear ears are highly expressive. They reveal irritation and affection well before the rest of his face has agreed to participate.

Scent
Saffron, rain on stone, citrus peel, and warm parchment.

Social Profile
Public Mask
Charming, cultured, patient, and faintly mysterious.
Friends
Leandro Quiroga, select academy astronomers, two trusted trade magistrates, and Octavio when their rivalry is not actively being fed.
Romance
Courteous and seductive but cautious about genuine dependence. He tests consistency before offering vulnerability.
Gives Affection Through
Conversation, quality time, thoughtful gifts, attentive touch, and sharing private knowledge.
Worst Habits
Testing loyalty, strategic jealousy, withholding information, and treating conflict like a negotiation to win.
Psychological Profile

Marcelo is highly intelligent, socially perceptive, and controlled, with a deep need to remain difficult to read.

Cognitive Style
Pattern-based and probabilistic. He reads networks, incentives, and contradictions faster than isolated facts.
Emotional Style
Subtle rather than narrow. Amusement, suspicion, desire, and fear often appear as different shades of the same composure.

Verbal Style

Struggles
Chronic insomnia, controlled anxiety, and compulsive contingency planning.
Personal Life
Spirituality
Interested in the Returning faith more as a pattern of memory than a matter of devotion.

Vices
Late-night astronomy, rare spices, calculated gambling, and collecting secrets he does not actually need.
Music
Intricate chamber music, glass instruments, slow dance rhythms, and melancholy love songs.
Intimacy
Sexuality
Pansexual.
Behavior
Playful and controlled, with a preference for extended anticipation, explicit boundaries, and partners capable of surprising him intellectually.
Preferences
Restraint, sensory focus, verbal control, and consensual power games. Chosen vulnerability gives him a safe way to surrender uncertainty without actually losing agency.
Background

Marcelo was raised inside a house that treated commerce, hospitality, and espionage as neighboring arts.

A childhood kidnapping attempt taught him that charm and observation could sometimes defend him more effectively than open force.

Current Circumstances
He is modernizing eastern trade and water systems while quietly increasing his influence among academy professionals and urban merchants.
Telltale Trait
His constellation markings brighten when his pulse rises, making complete emotional concealment impossible at close range.
Duke Rodrigo Saavedra, a pale draugr with ash-gray twin tails, winter-blue eyes, dragon jewelry, and a beauty mark on his cheek.
Southern Duke

Rodrigo Saavedra

Draugr • 32 • 6'3"

Birthday
December 28.
Background
Mistralan southerner from an old martial and agricultural noble house.
Wealth
Extremely wealthy through greenhouse acreage, stockyards, armories, and ducal estates, although his revival created unresolved inheritance disputes.
Transportation
A black-armored polar bear trained for military command, plus a compact heated carriage for formal appearances.
Physical Profile
Build
6'3", approximately 220 pounds. Broad through the shoulders and back with a sharply tapered waist and narrow hips.
Appearance
Pallid gray skin with cool blue undertones, winter-blue eyes, a beauty mark on one cheek, and nearly invisible restoration seams.
Hair
Long ash-gray hair worn in high twin tails with severe precision.
Scent
Cold incense, polished steel, dried roses, and snow-covered earth.
Mannerisms
Checks his pulse from old habit, holds eye contact too long, adjusts his dragon jewelry when unsettled, and otherwise remains remarkably still.
Draugr Physiology
No ordinary heartbeat, little need for sleep, reduced pain response, and the ability to function through injuries that would incapacitate most living people.
Vulnerabilities
Fire and tissue desiccation. Smoke from grave-resin incense causes severe disorientation.
Social Profile
Public Mask
Cold, immaculate, severe, and almost theatrically aristocratic.
Friends

Romance
Intense and formal, yet unexpectedly shy about unexpected physical contact since his revival.
Gives Affection Through
Loyalty, ritual, careful touch, symbolic gifts, and publicly defending a partner's dignity.
Worst Habits
Emotional tests, morbid self-sacrifice, possessiveness, and withdrawing before someone else can reject what he has become.
Psychological Profile

Rodrigo is proud, disciplined, and psychologically divided between the man he remembers being and the restored body he inhabits now.

Cognitive Style
Linear, legalistic, and tactical. He organizes problems into duties, threats, assets, and consequences.
Emotional Style
Powerful but delayed. Feelings often reach him hours after the event that caused them.
Core Belief
Identity is proven through continuity of choice rather than bodily life, although he fears everyone else sees only an imitation of the man who died.
Verbal Style
Precise diction, formal titles, dry fatalistic humor, and occasional blunt remarks that land harder than intended.
Struggles
Derealization, body alienation, post-traumatic stress surrounding death and restoration, and intermittent depressive episodes.
Personal Life
Spirituality
Deeply preoccupied with the Returning because his restoration interrupted what should have been the natural passage between death, Stillwinter, and rebirth.
Hobbies
Jewelry design, fencing, dragon folklore, formal dance, and cultivating black roses beneath glass.
Skills
Military command, estate law, swordsmanship, logistics, intimidation, and exceptional endurance through severe injury.
Vices
Dueling, expensive jewelry, remaining awake for days, and repeatedly visiting places connected to his death.
Music
Funeral choirs, martial strings, dramatic opera, and slow formal dances.
Intimacy
Sexuality
Gay.
Behavior
Careful, intense, and strongly focused on consent, preparation, eye contact, and reassurance after vulnerability.
Preferences
Ritual, temperature contrast, controlled surrender, and reverent touch. These help him reclaim his restored body as chosen and desired rather than merely preserved.
Background

Rodrigo died during a border engagement shortly after inheriting the Southern Duchy. His family restored him through an old funerary rite.

His return immediately created a legal crisis over whether a revived man remained the same person under inheritance law. Rodrigo was forced to prove his identity publicly while privately questioning the same thing.

Current Circumstances
He governs effectively, strengthens Hoarfell's defenses, and searches for the person responsible for arranging the attack that killed him.
Dragon Jewelry
His elaborate dragon jewelry predates his death and serves as an emotional anchor. Rodrigo can recount the history of every piece.

Physical Profile
Build
6'0", approximately 190 pounds. Athletic, agile, and broad enough through the chest to look stronger than his fine clothes initially suggest.

Hair
Chin-length moonlit white hair, loose and luminous enough to reflect magical light.
Scent
Snow-damp wool, bergamot, white musk, and crushed mint.
Mannerisms
One ear swivels toward interesting gossip, he grins before saying something dangerous, and he paces when forced to wait.
Physiology
Fast healing, acute hearing, and an unusually high metabolism.

Enthusiastic and affectionate, quick to pursue, and much slower to reveal how seriously he takes rejection.
Gives Affection Through
Play, praise, physical affection, shared adventures, impulsive gifts, and constant messages.
Worst Habits
Jealous provocation, disappearing to test whether he will be followed, impulsive promises, and turning hurt into performance.

Hobbies
Skating, dancing, fashion design, rooftop running, theatre, gossip, and training courier wolves.
Skills
Rapid shapeshifting, route knowledge, public speaking, knife fighting, trend spotting, and crowd management.
Vices
Nightlife, expensive clothes, racing couriers, collecting cheek jewelry, and answering messages at impossible hours.
Music
Dance music, theatrical songs, fast drums, romantic ballads, and anything new enough to irritate older nobles.
Intimacy
Sexuality
Bisexual.
Behavior
Playful, affectionate, communicative, and drawn to partners who can match his energy without being dazzled by his title.
Preferences
Chase play, praise, playful marking, and switching control. These satisfy his need to feel actively chosen and safely challenged.
Background

Octavio became duke after illness removed both his father and elder brother from succession within the same winter.

Older courtiers repeatedly dismissed him as frivolous. He learned to hide preparation behind spontaneity and use charm as political camouflage.

Current Circumstances
He is improving courier infrastructure, sponsoring Snowveil artists, and proving that youth and irreverence do not equal political weakness.
Moonlit Hair
His white hair genuinely reflects magical light and glows most strongly when he is in love, furious, or close to shifting.

Hair
Extremely long birch-bark brown and cream hair, worn loose to his thighs or braided for travel.

Intimacy
Sexuality
Gay.
Behavior
Slow, sensual, highly attentive, and most comfortable when intimacy includes trust, water, and deliberate aftercare.
Preferences

Background

Tomás inherited a march repeatedly damaged by thaw floods and became known for rebuilding vulnerable settlements before restoring his own estate.

As a boy, he survived being trapped beneath river ice. Years later, he lost his first love during an outer-grid evacuation, deepening both his devotion to the march and his tendency to preserve grief rather than release it.

Current Circumstances
He is reinforcing water channels, investigating unexplained heat loss, and resisting court pressure to reduce support for remote villages.
Chipped Gemstone
The red gemstone at his throat belonged to his first love. He refuses every jeweler who offers to repair it.

A reinforced ice-cutter sledge built for dangerous open routes and pulled by a disciplined polar-bear team.
Physical Profile
Build
6'2", approximately 180 pounds. Lithe, corded, and built for endurance rather than bulk.

Javier spent his youth escorting caravans and rose to prominence after defending a refuge during a three-week heating-grid failure.

He later survived captivity by raiders. The bite scars across his neck came from another captive in shark form during the escape.

Current Circumstances
He is fortifying the coldest road in Montaño March and investigating smugglers diverting emergency heatstones.
Key Pendant
The weathered key at his throat once opened the cell he escaped from. It opens nothing now. Javier keeps it as proof that every lock was made by someone and can therefore be defeated.

Background

Leandro inherited Quiroga March after a wasting illness killed his father and exposed just how dependent the march had become on hidden vrykolak medical networks.

From childhood, he was taught that one public mistake could endanger every vrykolak in Mistralis. Discipline became both protection and prison.

Current Circumstances
He is formalizing safe blood-donation systems, strengthening night patrols, and resisting nobles who profit from secrecy and stigma.
Gold-Flecked Eyes
The gold in his eyes brightens after feeding and dims when he is exhausted, making his physical condition much easier to read than he would prefer.

Background

Diego earned a military scholarship after protecting greenhouse children during a feral-boar breach. He later distinguished himself during a mountain rescue patrol.

The death of his first commander taught him that preparation saves lives, but also left him convinced that every loss reflects some personal failure.

Current Circumstances
He serves in the royal rotation while training younger knights in scent tracking and cold-weather protection.

Background

Matías originally worked as a freight lifter before carrying six trapped miners out of a collapsing ley-well chamber and earning a royal commission.

Being feared for his size as a child taught him restraint. Being trusted during the rescue taught him that restraint alone was not the same thing as actually living.

Current Circumstances
He leads heavy-rescue drills, advocates for giant-accessible public architecture, and serves as Ramiro's most trusted emergency liaison.
Knuckle Runes
Each rune across his knuckles records a person he brought home alive. He refuses to place memorial runes on his striking hand.

The Snowbound Kingdom

Living Against Winter

Mistralis is a compact northern kingdom surrounded by lethal cold. Permanent life exists only where engineered warmth can reach it. Streets, homes, greenhouses, water systems, tunnels, and public buildings survive because the kingdom has learned to build against winter rather than wait for it to relent.

Where Warmth Can Reach

Geography

Mistralis lies north of Aetharia and northwest of Eldralis. The Forsaken Lands stretch between Mistralis and Aetharia, forming a hostile buffer rather than an orderly shared border.

Fantasy map of Mistralis showing its Crownlands, inner territories, and outer marches.
Center

Crownlands

The oldest and strongest section of the heating grid. Frostcrown, the royal palace, central heat works, treasury, and major Crown greenhouse all sit here.

Inner Ring

Four Duchies

Warm, densely settled, and comparatively secure. The Inner Duchies contain the eight surrounding city districts, major roads, estates, workshops, and dependable greenhouse acreage.

Outer Edge

Four Marches

The weakening edge of permanent settlement. Marcher rulers handle heating failures, border defense, isolated communities, and whatever waits beyond reliable warmth.

Political Structure
Mistralis contains one King, four Dukes, four Marquesses, twelve Earls, twelve Viscounts, twenty-four Barons, and a variable number of Knights. The Crownlands sit at the center, four Inner Duchies surround them, and four Outer Marches occupy the exposed edge of the heating grid.
Why Mistralis Cannot Simply Expand
Snow and ice dominate the surrounding region. Permanent settlement requires streets, water, buildings, greenhouses, and shelters to remain connected to engineered heat. Mistralis can grow, but new territory must first be surveyed, excavated, reinforced, insulated, ventilated, and connected to the existing grid.
Engineered Warmth

The Kingdom Beneath the Kingdom

Mistralis is not limited by a shortage of magical energy. Its problem is safely moving that energy through frozen ground to every place people expect to live.

Northern LeylineThermal magic near the surface
Ley WellsReinforced extraction chambers
GridworksRegulation and engineering
ConduitsInsulated heat channels
HeatstonesStored emergency warmth
DistrictsHomes, water and greenhouses

Ley-Heat

Most usable heat originates in the Northern Duchy, where a powerful magical leyline passes unusually close to the surface. Royal Gridwrights build reinforced ley wells around stable access points.

Heatstones

Silver-blue heatstones store ley-heat for furnaces, shelters, relay stations, damaged grid sections, military expeditions, greenhouses, and settlements waiting for permanent connection.

Royal Gridworks

The Gridworks is a prestigious Crown institution. Its engineers, Heatkeepers, Surveyors, Tunnel Wardens, and apprentices keep the entire inhabited kingdom functional.

Crown and Northern Duke

Duke Ramiro controls the land containing the extraction sites. The Crown controls contracts, transport rights, emergency reserves, distribution, and the legal right to draw ley-heat.

How Grid Expansion Works
New territory is surveyed before tunnels are excavated through exceptionally hard frozen ground. Crews reinforce the passages, install insulation and ventilation, fit heating channels and relay chambers, connect the new section to the existing network, and test it before permanent buildings or greenhouses are constructed above.
Life Below the Snow

The Hearthways

Safe public portions of the tunnel network are not treated as maintenance corridors. They are sheltered streets, markets, gathering places, emergency refuges, and one of the warmest pieces of public life in Mistralis.

Public Hearthways

Heated BenchesFood StallsMarketsPerformancesWarming HallsTraveler RoomsGrid Galleries

Restricted Grid

Beyond public corridors are service passages, relay chambers, controls, repair routes, and working infrastructure accessible only to Royal Gridworks personnel and Tunnel Wardens.

Silverwell Baths

Built around a natural mineral spring discovered during early tunnel construction, the Silverwell Baths mix public pools, steam chambers, private rooms, treatments, food, tea, and an absolutely heroic amount of gossip.

Emergency Shelter

Hearthways double as evacuation routes and warming spaces during grid failures, allowing residents to move beneath the city toward functioning districts.

When the Heat Fails
Emergency bells announce a failed section. Heatkeepers redirect available warmth while repair crews isolate the damaged grid and residents move toward functioning Hearthways, neighboring districts, warming halls, or designated shelters.
  • Homes and water systems can freeze.
  • Greenhouses receive priority protection.
  • Heatstone reserves are deployed.
  • Public tunnels become crowded refuges.
  • Outer settlements suffer failures most often.
  • Long outages can cause crop loss, illness, exposure, and death.
Food Is Civic Infrastructure

Every Harvest Matters

Every district maintains an immense greenhouse large enough to serve its population. Fruits, vegetables, medicinal plants, fodder, and much of Mistralis's staple food supply exist because those structures stay warm.

Under Glass

Staple Crops

Frost barley, black rye, silver oats, buckwheat, potatoes, turnips, beets, carrots, onions, cabbage, peas, beans, squash, and hardy apples.

Below Ground

Tunnel Fungi

Hearthcaps, white shelf mushrooms, and medicinal threadfungus grow in warm humid chambers without consuming greenhouse light.

Livestock Halls

Goats + Boars

Cold-hardy goats provide milk, cheese, hair fiber, hides, and meat. Domestic boars provide pork, fat, bristles, and practical use for safe scraps.

Winter Stores

Preserved Food

Hard cheese, smoked meat, sausages, pickled vegetables, dried mushrooms, beans, grain crackers, preserves, roots, and concentrated broth.

Greenhouse care is basic civic knowledge in Mistralis. Children begin with supervised cultivation because every household depends upon the harvest.
Culinary and Medicinal Plants
Culinary beds commonly grow chives, dill, sage, thyme, parsley, and several types of mint. Controlled medicinal beds include frostwort for fever remedies, emberroot for circulation and cold recovery, glassleaf for cleansing washes, and silvermint for cough and stomach preparations.
Why Mistralis Still Imports Food
Wild animal populations recover too slowly to feed the kingdom through hunting alone. Mistralis imports most meat, fur, and leather from regions with denser wildlife and larger herds. Local hunting remains competitive and prestigious, but it supplements trade rather than replacing it.
Beyond the Warm Streets

Mounts and Travel

Snow changes what transportation means. Mistralis relies on immense polar bears for strength and giant white wolves for speed, especially once travelers leave the safest inner roads.

Freight • Military • Heavy Transport

Polar Bears

Polar bears serve mainly as freight and military mounts. Their size and strength make them suited to supply hauling, armored riders, heavy sledges, and difficult movement through deep snow.

Scouts • Hunters • Couriers

White Wolves

White wolves are faster and more agile. They carry scouts, hunters, couriers, and urgent travelers along narrow routes and unsettled terrain where a bear's bulk becomes a disadvantage.

Bonded Exceptions
Training determines what a mount is expected to do, but not always whom it chooses. A bear raised for military work may bond with an ordinary household and happily pull a market cart. A wolf intended for courier service may choose a craftsperson, hunter, or traveler instead. Mistralis accepts those bonds even when the result is spectacularly inconvenient.
Travel Beyond the Strong Grid
Outer travel depends on relay shelters, emergency heatstones, maintained routes, mount stations, and careful preparation. The farther a traveler moves from the strongest heated territory, the less winter behaves like scenery and the more it becomes the primary survival problem.

Life Inside the Warmth

What the Winter Could Not Take

Mistralan culture is shaped by one unavoidable truth: survival is communal. Heat, food, shelter, education, and emergency preparation are not distant political concerns. They are woven directly into everyday life.

Winter shapes the kingdom. It does not get to own everything inside it.

Warmth Is Meant to Be Shared

Long winters do not empty Mistralan social life. Markets, bathhouses, greenhouses, taverns, skating terraces, theatres, and Hearthway gathering spaces give people somewhere to work, meet, celebrate, and simply exist beyond the cold.

01

Markets

District markets bring together food, imported goods, tools, clothing, household necessities, and the daily movement of the people buying and selling them.

02

Bathhouses

Heated public baths provide warmth and relief from the long winter while also serving as important social spaces.

03

Greenhouses

Greenhouses are essential food infrastructure, but their communal harvests and constant labor also place them firmly inside ordinary civic life.

04

Taverns

Taverns and supper houses give each district its own evening rhythm, from workers finishing a shift to travelers, veterans, hunters, and students gathering over hot food.

05

Skating Terraces

Public skating turns the kingdom's defining climate into recreation, spectacle, and another reason for people to gather outdoors.

06

Theatres

From polished playhouses to underground venues, performance remains part of public life through music, plays, comedy, and other entertainment.

07

Hearthway Spaces

The heated tunnels are more than transportation. Their gathering areas keep daily movement social even when the streets above are hostile.

Power Follows Warmth

Mistralis is a male-dominated hereditary monarchy. Political authority and landed power radiate outward from the Crownlands alongside the reach of the subterranean heating grid.

Land nearest the capital is warmer, denser, and more prestigious. Beyond it, political comfort gives way to border responsibility, failing heat, and the dangers of the outer winter.

Crownlands

The oldest and strongest part of the heating grid. The royal family directly controls the capital, central heat-distribution works, major repair tunnels, and highly productive greenhouse land.

Inner Ring

Four Duchies

Dependable heat supports dense settlement, established roads, noble estates, workshops, and valuable greenhouse acreage.

Outer Edge

Four Marches

The exposed edge of settled territory. Their rulers face border defense, heating failures, isolated settlements, and threats beyond the strongest warmth.

Territorial Structure

The King rules the central Crownlands and oversees four Inner Duchies and four Outer Marches.

The duchies contain eight counties, while the marches contain four. Those twelve counties are divided into twenty-four baronies.

Districts + Noble Territory

Frostcrown remains Crownland under the King's direct control and belongs to no duchy or county.

The eight surrounding city districts also function as the eight counties of the four Inner Duchies.

District names describe civic geography. Duchies, counties, and baronies describe political jurisdiction and landholding. These layers overlap rather than forming separate pieces of land.

Male-Line Inheritance

Titles and territorial ownership pass through the male line by default in the following order:

  1. Eldest legitimate son
  2. Next legitimate son in birth order
  3. Brother of the deceased
  4. Brother's eldest legitimate son
  5. Nearest legitimate male relative
Women + Blood Claims

A daughter may carry a blood claim but does not ordinarily inherit the title herself. She may transmit that claim to her husband or son, making noble marriages intensely political.

Exceptional Female Rule

A woman may rule land directly through an explicit royal exception, a regency, or the complete absence of an acceptable male claimant.

The Returning

Mistralans believe every soul will eventually live again. Death does not erase wrongdoing, however, and rebirth is not immediate for every soul.

Rebirth
The soul is permitted another life.
The Reckoning

After death, the soul's own actions and choices are judged. The resulting sentence in Stillwinter is believed to be proportional to what that person chose to do.

A person who lived decently may pass onward quickly. Someone who caused great harm may remain in Stillwinter for a very long time.

Personal Responsibility

The Reckoning weighs what a person chose to do, ordered, knowingly enabled, or deliberately neglected.

Intention, circumstance, and coercion are also considered when judging a person's choices.

Repentance + Restitution

Mistralans believe sincere repentance and meaningful restitution may shorten a soul's sentence in Stillwinter.

No living person can prove that belief correct, so it remains a matter of doctrine, hope, and argument rather than known spiritual law.

Mortal Law

Stillwinter does not determine imprisonment, execution, criminal sentencing, or official law. Mortal courts judge conduct in this life and the needs of public safety.

Earthly officials do not attempt to calculate the spiritual sentence awaiting a person after death.

Common Sayings
“He will answer in Stillwinter.”
“May your Stillwinter be brief.”
“No gold buys warmth in Stillwinter.”
“The courts may fail, but Stillwinter does not.”

If a Soul Returns Remembering

Most souls begin their new lives without memories of the people they once were. When memory does survive rebirth, Mistralis has an old and intensely private way of testing the claim.

◇
Private Recognition Sentence

A Secret Meant for Another Life

During life, every person memorizes a set sentence and keeps it private. The family preserves that sentence after death in case someone later claims to remember the life that ended.

Break the Seal
Correctly repeating the preserved sentence in a later life provides powerful evidence that the claimed connection is genuine.
Most Remember Nothing

Previous lives ordinarily leave no accessible personal memory behind.

One Remembered Life Is Rare

Remembering even one previous incarnation is extraordinary and treated seriously only when convincing evidence accompanies the claim.

Multiple Lives Are Unheard Of

No accepted case involves someone remembering several past lives. Such a claim would be met with deep skepticism.

Family Across Two Lives

When a remembered-life claim is accepted, the returned soul may be recognized as belonging to both the family they were born into and the family of the person they remember being.

Neither relationship erases the other. Mistralan belief therefore allows a single soul to hold legitimate family ties across two different lives.

The House of Returning

Frostcrown's House of Returning is a respected sanctuary associated with recognition customs. It records private recognition sentences and counsels families when reincarnation claims arise.
